Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition Classic Tee
The painter and architect Viktor Hartmann died suddenly in 1873, aged 39. When a memorial exhibition opened the next year, his friend Mussorgsky walked through it and wrote the ten movements of Pictures at an Exhibition in about two weeks. Ravel orchestrated it in 1922 for Koussevitzky. The brass version gets the attention. The piano original is worth hearing.
