Amy Beach was giving public piano recitals at seven. Her Gaelic Symphony, played by the Boston Symphony in October 1896, was the first symphony by an American woman to be published and performed at that level. She built it on Irish folk melodies, partly in answer to Dvořák's call for American composers to use their own roots.
