Honegger: Pacific 231 Classic Tee
Pacific 231 is named for a steam locomotive, a 4-6-2 in American counting and a 2-3-1 in French. Honegger wrote it in 1923, it was first played at the Paris Opéra in May 1924 under Koussevitzky, and he was a genuine train enthusiast. He later insisted the piece was about mathematical acceleration. The locomotive is standing behind him, looking innocent.
