Ida Rubinstein commissioned Boléro as a ballet for the Paris Opéra in 1928. Ravel had wanted to orchestrate Albéniz's Iberia and found the rights had gone to someone else, so he wrote something original instead. One rhythm, one melody, and a crescendo of around fifteen minutes. It turned out fine.
