Claude Debussy1862 – 1918

Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune runs about ten minutes, opens on a solo flute, and was first played in Paris in December 1894. Mallarmé, who wrote the poem and hadn't wanted it set to music, wrote to Debussy after the premiere to call it a marvel. Pierre Boulez later dated modern music from that flute. Here's Debussy, wrapped in swirls from a decade he never saw.
