Mustel

Limited edition. In 1891, on his way to America, Tchaikovsky stopped in Paris and heard a new instrument from the workshop of Auguste Mustel: a small keyboard whose hammers strike steel plates, somewhere between a music box and falling snow. He wrote to his publisher to buy one and asked him to keep it quiet, afraid that Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov would hear of it and use it first. They didn't. A year later the célesta played the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and it has been his ever since. Here for now, not forever.
